Elliott Erwitt at the Blanton

Wearing a plastic fried egg on his lapel Elliott Erwitt, longtime Magnum photographer, spoke for a second night to a full house at the Blanton Museum of Art on Friday, September 24, 2009.

"Taking pictures is not a thinking process unless you are doing conceptual work. If you're taking pictures its just what you see," said Erwitt.

Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker influenced his work and mentored the young Erwitt. The legendary father of modern photojournalism, french photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, is his favorite photographer.

Though he is both a commercial photographer and a photojournalist, "Most of the pictures are just me with a camera," he said. Erwitt carried a small camera, his Leica, with him everywhere.

With a dozen book titles published he gets the most pleasure from seeing his work in this format. "Books are kind of in cement, they don't go away," he said.

After the lecture he signed books for the huge crowd including his most recent book, "The Art of Andre S. Solidor a.k.a. Elliott Erwitt."

The gift shop at the Blanton Museum of art has signed copies of The Art of Andre S. Solido a.k.a. Elliott Erwitt, Unseen, Rome, Dogs, New York, and Photographie for sale.

Erwitt's future projects include an upcoming book in Paris and an exhibition in San Sepulchro, Italy.
